The Prefects held their third fundraiser to coincide with Maryfield Sports Day on Monday the 16^th of May. They raised the sum of €957 which will be sent to Bressie’s charity, A Lust for Life. This is a charity that supports youth mental health issues. Thanks to all for your support.

We all enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of wellie throwing, sack races, three-legged races, tug of war, relay races and bean bag waddles. The sun shone on what was a memorable and fun day in our beautiful playing fields.

In November 2015 Ms. Townshend’s First Year computer classes entered a poetry competition that was run by the Jackie Clarke Foundation. Jackie Clarke, from Ballina Co. Mayo, was a business man and collector of Irish historical material. Events such as this poetry competition are run by the foundation to promote a knowledge and love of Irish history in our young people.

To our delight Amy Noonan, Ellenjane O’Brien and Seána O’Grady from 1K received first prize for their poem about the 1798 rebellion.

Maryfield College Green Schools Committee is delighted to announce that we have been awarded our second Green Flag under the theme of energy.
For the past two years the Green Schools Committee along with the whole school community have been attempting to reduce the amount of energy that we use in the school through 5 simple steps.

1. turning off the lights when they are not needed
2. pulling up the blinds to allow natural light into the room
3. switching off the data projectors and P.C.’s when not in use
4. turning down the radiators if the room gets too hot
5. closing all windows and doors to avoid draughts

To achieve this award, the Green Schools Committee, with the assistance of the Transition Year Green Schools classes and the rest of the school community, had the difficult task of completing all of the 7 steps to getting a Green Flag.

1. form a Green Schools Committee
2. complete an environmental review
3. put into place an ongoing action plan for energy reduction
4. monitor and evaluate the action plan continually
5. inform and involve the school community and the wider community of our action plan and achievements
6. write a green code

On the 2nd of March 2016 Audrey Duff from Dublin City Council visited the school and met with the Green Schools Committee to ask them about the 7 steps that had been completed and to ensure that the school had met all of the criteria necessary to achieve a green flag. Ms. Duff was very impressed with the committee and the work that the school and completed. As the Green Schools Coordinator I would also like to compliment all of the members of the Green Schools Committee on their participation during the Green Flag renewal visit. Each committee member was keen to show off our school and explain to Audrey all the work that we had done in relation to both our Litter and Waste Theme and Energy Theme.

The official application for our second Green Flag was submitted on 11th of March to An Taisce and I am delighted to announce that our application was successful and a group of representatives from the Green Schools Committee will be attending The Green Flag Award Ceremony on May 24th in The Helix.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff, students and parents of Maryfield College for their contribution to the work involved in achieving our second Green Flag. The Green Schools Programme can only work if the whole school community get together to implement change and sustain good environmental habits. Congratulations to us all and I look forward to starting work on the third flag under the theme of water conservation.

The Global Issues Group in Maryfield was recognized for it’s outstanding work in Global Issues at an award ceremony in Limerick this week.  The Global Issues Group led by Ms. Mellon and started initially by the members of the Concern Debate Team have initiated a number of projects within the school including a Global Issues Noticeboard, special assemblies, awareness raising, fundraising and focus groups.  Some members of the group participated in the Concern Debates and others attended workshops on taking action to tackle global issues.

It is the first time Maryfield has been recognized for contributing to Global Issues Education in Ireland. Watch this space for more ideas and innovations coming from the group next year.

Transition Year Students visited the Irish Aid Centre in the Department of Foreign Affairs Building in Dublin 2 this week to learn about the work that Irish Aid does to support developing countries.  The students participated in an interactive workshops aiming to challenge our stereotypes and preconceptions around poverty and hunger.  Pictured here are Ana Barbu and Michael Chanda-workshop facilitators.  Many thanks to all the staff in the Department of Foreign Affairs for an insightful and challenging workshop.

Bhí go leor imeachtaí spraoiúla againn i mbliana do Sheachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí an tseachtain le tosú le cinemobile nó pictiúrlann shoghluaiste ag teacht chun na scoile ach faraor bhí sé rómhór chun teacht isteach an geata! Mar sin, chaith scoláirí na Dara Bliana uair a’ chloig ag féachaint ar scannán sa halla. Bhí an poc fada againn sa pháirc os comhar na scoile ag am lóin agus gach lá cuireadh an comórtas Laoch an Lae ar siúl. Bhí tóraíocht taisce do scoláirí na Chéad Bhliana chomh maith le Tráth na gCeist do scoláirí na Cúigiú Bliana. Bhain gach duine an-sult as yoga a dhéanamh trí Ghaeilge freisin ag ceardlann a cuireadh ar siúl ag Óga Yoga sa halla spóirt. Rinneamar go léir ár ndícheall an ‘cúpla focal’ a úsaid i rith na seachtaine agus níos mó má bhíomar ábalta. ‘Beatha teanga í a labhairt!’

Lá an Fhorógra 2016

Tuesday March 15th 2016 was celebrated as Proclamation day at Maryfield along with schools throughout the country. All the students participated in a moving and enjoyable ceremony that included a time for respectful reflection and some fun cultural activity. The Irish Proclamation was read followed by our own Proclamation for a New Generation in which we voiced our vision for a peaceful and inclusive Ireland. We raised our new flag and then sang Amhrán na bhFiann. As part of our creative input to the event each student prepared a coloured piece of card reflecting what it means to them to be Irish. We raised these green, white and orange cards on Proclamation Day to form our own national flag. Our event concluded with some céilí dancing that was very much enjoyed by all.

Our vibrant Student Council ran a very enjoyable Easter Egg Hunt just before the Easter Holidays. Each year group lined up at the front of the school in anticipation of a race to search for hidden eggs on the front field. Students charged in all directions after the starter’s orders in the hope of finding the coveted prizes.
